Sickness and ruqyah

The Prophet's ruqyah, visiting the sick, pain in the body and protection from the evil eye.

1. Dhikr 1 of 13 · Once

   Surah Al-Fatihah

   بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

   بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ﴿١﴾ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ ﴿٢﴾ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ﴿٣﴾ مَٰلِكِ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ ﴿٤﴾ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ ﴿٥﴾ ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ ﴿٦﴾ صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ ﴿٧﴾

   In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. [All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds - The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful, Sovereign of the Day of Recompense. It is You we worship and You we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path - The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.

   NoteAbu Sa'id al-Khudri recited it over a stung tribal chief who recovered, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: how did you know it is a ruqyah?

2. Dhikr 2 of 13 · 3 times

   The three Quls

   بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

   قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ﴿١﴾ ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ ﴿٢﴾ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ ﴿٣﴾ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ ﴿٤﴾ بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ ﴿١﴾ مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ ﴿٢﴾ وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ ﴿٣﴾ وَمِن شَرِّ ٱلنَّفَّٰثَٰتِ فِى ٱلْعُقَدِ ﴿٤﴾ وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ ﴿٥﴾ بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ ﴿١﴾ مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ ﴿٢﴾ إِلَٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ ﴿٣﴾ مِن شَرِّ ٱلْوَسْوَاسِ ٱلْخَنَّاسِ ﴿٤﴾ ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ ﴿٥﴾ مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ ﴿٦﴾

   Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, Nor is there to Him any equivalent." Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak From the evil of that which He created And from the evil of darkness when it settles And from the evil of the blowers in knots And from the evil of an envier when he envies." Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, The Sovereign of mankind. The God of mankind, From the evil of the retreating whisperer - Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind - From among the jinn and mankind."

   NoteWhen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fell ill he would recite the three Quls over himself and blow lightly.

3. Dhikr 3 of 13 · Once

   The Prophet's ruqyah

   اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ، أَذْهِبِ الْبَأْسَ، اشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لاَ شِفَاءَ إِلاَّ شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لاَ يُغَادِرُ سَقَماً

   Allahumma rabban-nas, athhibil-ba's, ishfi antash-shafee, la shifa'a illa shifa'uk, shifa'an la yughadiru saqama.

   O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the affliction and heal, for You are the Healer; there is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind.

4. Dhikr 4 of 13 · Once

   The ruqyah of Jibril

   بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ، مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ يُؤْذِيكَ، مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ أَوْ عَيْنٍ حَاسِدٍ، اللَّهُ يَشْفِيكَ، بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ

   Bismil-lahi arqeek, min kulli shay'in yu'theek, min sharri kulli nafsin aw 'aynin hasid, Allahu yashfeek, bismil-lahi arqeek.

   In the name of Allah I recite over you, from everything that harms you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye; may Allah heal you. In the name of Allah I recite over you.

5. Dhikr 5 of 13 · 7 times

   When feeling pain in the body

   Listen

   أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ

   A'oothu billahi waqudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa-uhathir.

   I seek refuge in Allah and in His power from the evil of what I feel and fear.

   NotePlace your hand on the painful spot, say "in the name of Allah" three times, then say seven times: I seek refuge in Allah and in His power from the evil of what I feel and fear.

6. Dhikr 6 of 13 · 7 times

   For the sick

   Listen

   أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ رَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ أَنْ يَشْفِيَكَ

   As'alul-lahal-'atheema rabbal-'arshil-'atheemi an yashfiyak.

   I ask Allah, the Most Great, Lord of the Mighty Throne, to heal you.

   VirtueNo Muslim visits a sick person whose time has not yet come and says these words seven times except that the sick person is cured.

7. Dhikr 7 of 13 · Once

   For the sick

   Listen

   لاَ بأْسَ طَهُورٌ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ

   La ba'sa tahoorun in shaal-lah.

   No harm; it is a purification, if Allah wills.

8. Dhikr 8 of 13 · Once

   Protecting children

   Listen

   أُعِيذُكُمَا بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ، مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لاَمَّةٍ

   U'eethukuma bikalimatil-lahit-tammah, min kulli shaytanin wahammah, wamin kulli 'aynin lammah.

   I seek protection for you both in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and poisonous creature, and from every evil eye.

   NoteThe Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sought protection for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn with it; for one child say "u'eethuka".

9. Dhikr 9 of 13 · Once

   Guarding against the evil eye

   Listen

   إِذَا رَأَى أَحَدُكُمْ مِنْ أَخِيهِ، أَوْ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ، أَوْ مِنْ مَالِهِ مَا يُعْجِبُهُ فَلْيَدْعُ لَهُ بِالْبَرَكَةِ، فَإِنَّ الْعَيْنَ حَقٌّ

   When one of you sees something he admires in his brother, in himself or in his property, let him pray for blessing in it, for the evil eye is real.

10. Dhikr 10 of 13 · Once

    Repelling the plots of the devils

    Listen

    أَعُوذُ بكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ الَّتِي لاَ يُجَاوِزُهُنَّ بَرٌّ وَلاَ فَاجِرٌ: مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ، وَبَرَأَ وَذَرَأَ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا يَنْزِلُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا يَعْرُجُ فيهَا، وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا ذَرَأَ فِي الْأَرْضِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا يَخْرُجُ مِنْهَا، وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتَنِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ طَارِقٍ إِلاَّ طَارِقاً يَطْرُقُ بِخَيْرٍ يَا رَحْمَنُ

    a'oothu bikalimatil-lahit-tammat, allatee la yujawizuhunna barrun wala fajir min sharri ma khalaq, wabaraa watharaa, wamin sharri ma yanzilu minas-sama', wamin sharri ma ya'ruju feeha, wamin sharri ma tharaa fil-ard, wamin sharri ma yakhruju minha, wamin sharri fitnanil-layli wannahar, wamin sharri kulli tariqin illa tariqan yatruqu bikhayrin ya Rahman.

    I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which neither the righteous nor the wicked can surpass, from the evil of what He has created, originated and multiplied; from the evil of what descends from the sky and the evil of what ascends to it; from the evil of what He has scattered in the earth and the evil of what comes out of it; from the evil of the trials of the night and the day; and from the evil of every night visitor, except one who comes with good, O Most Merciful.

11. Dhikr 11 of 13 · Once

    For the terminally ill

    Listen

    اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَأَلْحِقْنِي بِالرَّفِيقِ الْأَعْلَى

    Allahummagh-fir lee, warhamnee wa-alhiqnee birrafeeqil-a'la.

    O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, and join me with the highest companions.

12. Dhikr 12 of 13 · Once

    For the terminally ill

    Listen

    لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، إِنَّ لِلْمَوْتِ سَكَرَاتٍ

    La ilaha illal-lah, inna lilmawti sakarat.

    None has the right to be worshipped except Allah; death indeed has its agonies.

    NoteAt the time of his death the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would dip his hands in water, wipe his face and say it.

13. Dhikr 13 of 13 · Once

    For the terminally ill

    Listen

    لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ، لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ لَهُ المُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ

    La ilaha illal-lah, wallahu akbar, la ilaha illal-lahu wahdah, la shareeka lah, la ilaha illal-lahu lahul-mulku walahul-hamd, la ilaha illal-lah, wala hawla wala quwwata illa billah.

    None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah; to Him belongs the sovereignty and the praise. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.
