Tasbih and istighfar

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ

Subhanal-lahi wabihamdih.

Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him.

VirtueWhoever says: glory be to Allah and praise be to Him, one hundred times in a day, his sins are wiped away even if they are like the foam of the sea.

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ، وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

La ilaha illal-lahu wahdahu la shareeka lah, lahul-mulku walahul-hamd, wahuwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadeer.

None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner; to Him belongs the sovereignty and the praise, and He is over all things able.

VirtueWhoever says it ten times is like one who freed four slaves from the descendants of Isma'il.

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ

Subhanal-lahi wabihamdih, subhanal-lahil-'atheem.

Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him; glory be to Allah, the Most Great.

VirtueTwo phrases that are light on the tongue, heavy on the Scale and beloved to the Most Merciful: glory be to Allah and praise be to Him; glory be to Allah, the Most Great.

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَلاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Subhanal-lah, walhamdu lillah, wala ilaha illal-lah, wallahu akbar.

Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.

VirtueThe Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: saying these four words is more beloved to me than everything the sun has risen upon. He also said: the most beloved words to Allah are four: glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest; it does not matter which you begin with.

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ

Subhanal-lah.

Glory be to Allah.

VirtueThe Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: is any of you unable to earn a thousand good deeds every day? He was asked how, and he said: he glorifies Allah one hundred times, and a thousand good deeds are recorded for him or a thousand sins are erased.

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ

Subhanal-lahil-'atheemi wabihamdih.

Glory be to Allah, the Most Great, and praise be to Him.

VirtueWhoever says: glory be to Allah, the Most Great, and praise be to Him, a palm tree is planted for him in Paradise.

لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ

La hawla wala quwwata illa billah.

There is no might nor power except with Allah.

VirtueThe Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abdullah ibn Qays, shall I not direct you to a treasure from the treasures of Paradise? Say: there is no might nor power except with Allah.

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ، اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيراً، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ كَثِيراً، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ، لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ الْعَزِيزِ الْحَكِيمِ. اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَاهْدِنِي، وَارْزُقْنِي

La ilaha illal-lahu wahdahu la shareeka lah, Allahu akbaru kabeera, walhamdu lillahi katheera, subhanal-lahi rabbil-'alameen, la hawla wala quwwata illa billahil-'azeezil-hakeem. Allahummagh-fir lee, warhamnee, wahdinee, warzuqnee.

None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner. Allah is the Greatest, much praise is for Allah, glory be to Allah, Lord of the worlds; there is no might nor power except with Allah, the Almighty, the Wise. O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me and provide for me.

VirtueA Bedouin asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to teach him words to say; he taught him the first part, and when the man asked what was for himself, he said: say, O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me and provide for me.

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَاهْدِنِي، وَعَافِنِي، وَارْزُقْنِي

Allahummagh-fir lee, warhamnee, wahdinee, wa'afinee, warzuqnee.

O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, grant me well-being and provide for me.

VirtueWhen someone embraced Islam, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would teach him the prayer and then instruct him to supplicate with these words.

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ

Alhamdu lillah. La ilaha illal-lah.

All praise is for Allah. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah.

VirtueThe best supplication is: all praise is for Allah; and the best remembrance is: none has the right to be worshipped except Allah.

The enduring good deeds

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَلاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ

Subhanal-lah, walhamdu lillah, wala ilaha illal-lah, wallahu akbar, wala hawla wala quwwata illa billah.

Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

Seeking forgiveness

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ الَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Astaghfirul-lahal-'atheemal-lathee la ilaha illa huwal-hayyul-qayyoomu wa-atoobu ilayh.

I seek the forgiveness of Allah, the Most Great, besides whom none has the right to be worshipped, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining, and I repent to Him.

VirtueWhoever says it, Allah forgives him even if he had fled from the battlefield.

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Astaghfirul-laha wa-atoobu ilayh.

I seek the forgiveness of Allah and I repent to Him.

VirtueThe Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: by Allah, I seek Allah's forgiveness and repent to Him more than seventy times a day. He also said: O people, repent to Allah, for I repent to Him one hundred times a day.

How the Prophet counted his tasbih

عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَعْقِدُ التَّسْبِيحَ بِيَمِينِهِ

Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) counting the tasbih on the fingers of his right hand.
