For worry and grief

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي عَبْدُكَ، ابْنُ عَبْدِكَ، ابْنُ أَمَتِكَ، نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ، مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ، أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ، سَمَّيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ، أَوْ أَنْزَلْتَهُ فِي كِتَابِكَ، أَوْ عَلَّمْتَهُ أَحَداً مِنْ خَلْقِكَ، أَوِ اسْتَأْثَرْتَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ، أَنْ تَجْعَلَ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي، وَنُورَ صَدْرِي، وَجَلاَءَ حُزْنِي، وَذَهَابَ هَمِّي

Allahumma innee 'abduk, ibnu 'abdik, ibnu amatik, nasiyatee biyadik, madin fiyya hukmuk, 'adlun fiyya qada-ok, as-aluka bikulli ismin huwa lak, sammayta bihi nafsak, aw anzaltahu fee kitabik, aw 'allamtahu ahadan min khalqik awis-ta'tharta bihi fee 'ilmil-ghaybi 'indak, an taj'alal-Qurana rabee'a qalbee, wanoora sadree, wajalaa huznee wathahaba hammee.

O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant; my forelock is in Your hand, Your judgement over me is carried out, and Your decree over me is just. I ask You by every name that is Yours, by which You have named Yourself, revealed in Your Book, taught to any of Your creation, or kept to Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen: make the Quran the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the banisher of my grief and the remover of my worry.

VirtueNo one is ever afflicted by worry or grief and says it except that Allah removes his worry and grief and replaces it with relief.

For worry and grief

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ

Allahumma innee a'oothu bika minal-hammi walhuzn, wal'ajzi walkasali walbukhli waljubn, wadal'id-dayni waghalabatir-rijal.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from the burden of debt and from being overpowered by men.

In anguish

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ الْعَظِيمُ الْحَلِيمُ، لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ رَبُّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَرَبُّ الْأَرْضِ وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ

La ilaha illal-lahul-'atheemul-haleem, la ilaha illal-lahu rabbul-'arshil-'atheem, la ilaha illal-lahu rabbus-samawati warabbul-ardi warabbul-'arshil-kareem.

None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, the Most Great, the Forbearing. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth and Lord of the Noble Throne.

In anguish

اللَّهُمَّ رَحْمَتَكَ أَرْجُو، فَلاَ تَكِلْنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ، وَأَصْلِحْ لِي شَأْنِي كُلَّهُ، لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ

Allahumma rahmataka arjoo fala takilnee ila nafsee tarfata 'ayn, wa-aslih lee sha'nee kullah, la ilaha illa ant.

O Allah, it is Your mercy that I hope for, so do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye, and set right all my affairs. None has the right to be worshipped except You.

The supplication of Yunus

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظّالِمِينَ

La ilaha illa anta subhanaka innee kuntu minath-thalimeen.

None has the right to be worshipped except You; glory be to You, I have indeed been among the wrongdoers.

VirtueThe supplication of Dhun-Nun (Yunus) when he called from inside the whale: no Muslim ever supplicates with it for anything except that Allah answers him.

In anguish

اللَّهُ اللَّهُ رَبِّي لاَ أُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئاً

None has the right to be worshipped except You. How perfect You are, verily I was among the wrong-doers.

Allah, Allah is my Lord; I do not associate anything with Him.

When facing an enemy

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَجْعَلُكَ فِي نُحُورِهِم، وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شُرُورِهِمْ

Allahumma inna naj'aluka fee nuhoorihim wana'oothu bika min shuroorihim.

O Allah, we place You before them, and we seek refuge in You from their evil.

When facing an enemy

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ عَضُدِي، وَأَنْتَ نَصِيرِي، بِكَ أَحُولُ وَبِكَ أَصُولُ، وَبِكَ أُقاتِلُ

Allahumma anta 'adudee, wa-anta naseeree, bika ajoolu wabika asoolu wabika oqatil

O Allah, You are my support and my helper; by You I manoeuvre, by You I advance, and by You I fight.

Allah is sufficient for us

حَسْبُنا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

Hasbunal-lahu wani'mal-wakeel.

Allah is sufficient for us, and what an excellent Guardian He is.

Fearing the oppression of a ruler

اللَّهُمَّ ربَّ السَّمَوَاتِ السَّبْعِ، وَرَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، كُنْ لِي جَاراً مِنْ فُلاَنِ بْنِ فُلاَنٍ، وَأَحْزَابِهِ مِنْ خَلاَئِقِكَ، أَنْ يَفْرُطَ عَلَيَّ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ أَوْ يَطْغَى، عَزَّ جَارُكَ، وَجَلَّ ثَنَاؤُكَ، وَلاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ

Allaahumma rabbas-samaawaatis-sab'i, wa Rabbal-'Arshil-'Adheem, Kun lee jaaran min (here you mention the person's name) wa 'ahzabihi min khalaa'iqika, 'an yafruta 'alayya 'ahadun minhum 'aw yatghaa, 'Azza jaaruka, wa jalla thanaa'uka, wa laa 'ilaaha 'illaa 'Anta.

O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Mighty Throne, be my protector against so-and-so and his party from among Your creation, lest any of them transgress against me or oppress me. Mighty is Your protection, exalted is Your praise, and none has the right to be worshipped except You.

Fearing the oppression of a ruler

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللَّهُ أَعَزُّ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ جَمِيعاً، اللَّهُ أَعَزُّ مِمَّا أَخَافُ وَأَحْذَرُ، أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ الَّذِي لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ، الْمُمْسِكِ السَّمَوَاتِ السَّبْعِ أَنْ يَقَعْنَ عَلَى الأَرْضِ إِلاَّ بِإِذْنِهِ، مِنْ شَرِّ عَبْدِكَ فُلاَنٍ، وَجُنُودِهِ وَأَتْبَاعِهِ وَأَشْيَاعِهِ، مِنَ الْجِنِّ وَالإِنْسِ، اللَّهُمَّ كُنْ لِي جَاراً مِنْ شَرِّهِمْ، جَلَّ ثَنَاؤُكَ وَعَزَّ جَارُكَ، وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ، وَلاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ

Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu 'a'azzu min khalqihi jamee'an, Allaahu 'a'azzu mimmaa 'akhaafu wa 'ahdharu, 'a'oothu billaahil-lathee laa ilaaha illaa huwa, almumsikis-samaawaatis-sab'i 'an yaqa'na 'alaal-'ardhi 'illaa bi'ithnihi, min sharri 'abdika (name of the person) wa junoodihi wa 'atbaa'ihi wa ashyaa'ihi minal-jinni wal'insi, Allaahumma kun lee jaaran min sharrihim, Jalla thanaa'uka wa 'azza aaruka, wa tabaarakasmuka, wa laa ilaaha ghayruka.

Allah is the Greatest; Allah is mightier than all His creation; Allah is mightier than what I fear and dread. I seek refuge in Allah, besides whom none has the right to be worshipped, who holds the seven heavens from falling upon the earth except by His leave, from the evil of Your servant so-and-so, his soldiers, his followers and his supporters among the jinn and mankind. O Allah, be my protector against their evil. Exalted is Your praise, mighty is Your protection, blessed is Your name, and there is no god but You.

Against an enemy

اللَّهُمَّ مُنْزِلَ الْكِتَابِ، سَرِيعَ الْحِسَابِ، اهْزِمِ الأَحْزَابَ، اللَّهُمَّ اهزِمْهُمْ وَزَلْزِلْهُمْ

Allahumma munzilal-kitab, saree'al-hisab, ihzimil-ahzab, allahummah-zimhum wazalzilhum.

O Allah, Revealer of the Book, Swift in reckoning, defeat the confederates. O Allah, defeat them and shake them.

When fearing a people

اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِيهِمْ بِمَا شِئْتَ

Allahummak-fineehim bima shi'.

O Allah, protect me from them however You will.

When doubts assail one's faith

آمَنْتُ بِاللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ

(He should say: ( Amantu billahi warusulih.))

I believe in Allah and His messengers.

NoteSeek refuge in Allah, stop dwelling on the doubt, and recite: He is the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden, and He is Knowing of all things (57:3).

For settling a debt

اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلاَلِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكِ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

Allahummak-finee bihalalika 'an haramik, wa-aghninee bifadlika 'amman siwak.

O Allah, suffice me with what You have made lawful against what You have made unlawful, and make me independent, by Your bounty, of everyone besides You.

Whispers during prayer or recitation

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil.

NoteThen blow lightly to the left three times.

When something is difficult

اللَّهُمَّ لاَ سَهْلَ إِلاَّ مَا جَعَلْتَهُ سَهْلاً، وَأَنْتَ تَجْعَلُ الْحَزْنَ إِذَا شِئْتَ سَهْلاً

Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahla, wa-anta taj'alul- hazana in shi'ta sahla.

O Allah, there is no ease except what You make easy, and You make the difficult easy when You will.

After committing a sin

مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يُذنِبُ ذَنْباً فَيُحْسِنُ الطُّهُورَ، ثُمَّ يَقُومُ فَيُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ يَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ إِلاَّ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ

No servant commits a sin, then purifies himself well, stands and prays two units of prayer, and then seeks Allah's forgiveness, except that Allah forgives him.

Repelling the devil and his whispers

الاسْتِعَاذَةُ بِاللَّهِ مِنْهُ، وَالأَذَانُ، وَالأَذْكَارُ وَقِرَاءَةُ الْقُرْآنِ

Seeking refuge in Allah from him, the call to prayer, and the remembrances and recitation of the Quran.

NoteThe Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: do not make your houses like graves; the devil flees from the house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.

When something undesirable happens

قَدَرُ اللَّهُ وَمَا شَاءَ فَعَلَ

Qaddaral-lah, wama shaa fa'al.

Allah has decreed, and what He wills He does.

NoteDo not say "if only I had done such and such", for "if only" opens the door to the devil's work.

When struck by a calamity

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ، اللَّهُمَّ أْجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي، وَأَخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرَاً مِنْهَا

Inna lillahi wa-inna ilayhi raji'oon, allahumma'- jurnee fee museebatee wakhluf lee khayran minha.

To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and replace it for me with something better.

When angry

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

a'oothu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajeem.

I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed devil.

Fearing shirk

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُشْرِكَ بِكَ وَأَنَا أَعْلَمُ، وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا لاَ أَعْلَمُ

(shirk: to associate others with Allah in those things which are specific to Him. This can occur in (1) belief, e.g. to believe that other than Allah has the power to benefit or harm, (2) speech, e.g. to swear by other than Allah and (3) action, e.g. to bow or prostrate to other than Allah.)(Allahumma innee a'oothu bika an oshrika bika wa-ana a'lam, wa-astaghfiruka lima la a'lam.)

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowingly associating anything with You, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do unknowingly.
